This language has existed over thousands of years and is of great vitality. Now, the Chinese people who speak totally different dialects can read and write the same characters and communicate with Putonghua (Mandarin).

This language is basically a language of pictograph. But don't be afraid of those pictographic characters. One of its charm is that these characters help you understand and remember the meaning of a word. Take look at "一“ (meaning one) in Chinese. It looks like a stick lying on the ground, doesn't it? Does the Chinese character "人" (meaning person) look like a man standing on his two legs? Maybe you will remember these two characters after knowing their stories. You'll learn more interesting stories down the road.

Let's see another example. The word Sun was written in early days like and has gradually developed into 日(ri), for the convenience of writing and printing. The same is true for the word Moon, which developed from the symbol into 月(yue). The characters 日 and 月 still have traces of their original forms and so it's easy to learn them by heart. It is very interesting to note that these two characters put together form the word 明(ming) meaning "brightness". One can well imagine the brightness under the sun and moon.

Many new words are formed using combinations of these basic characters. For example,
