Rules of the Pinyin (phonetics)

1. when two vowels come together, the tone mark is put on the top of the vowel “a”.

   For example: xiàn     zhuāng

2. If there is no vowel “a”, the tone mark is put on the top of vowel “e” or “o”.

   For example: liè      kǒu

3. If the vowels “i” and “u” come together, the tone mark is put on the top of the last one.

   For example: liù      tuī
